Northcentral Technical College (NTC) is seeking a knowledgeable, energetic, and professional full-time faculty to teach in our Wood Science Associate Degree Program. This unique two-year program is taught out of NTC’s one-of-a-kind Wood Technology Center of Excellence located on our picturesque Antigo, Wisconsin campus. This bright and modern facility houses state-of-the-art equipment and includes a 27,000 square foot secondary manufacturing lab, a 5,800 square foot Saw Filing lab, and a brand-new fully-functioning 10,000 square foot industrial training Sawmill. These facilities are not only used for our Associate Degree program, but also support several certificates and Continuing Education classes across a wide-range of topics. Our unique learning environment attracts students and industry partners from across the country.

Antigo offers many lakes, expansive forested areas, and features numerous outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, hiking, golfing, camping, skiing, snowshoeing, and biking. With a population of around 8,000, the city of Antigo has a small-town feel, yet is large enough to meet your daily needs with multiple dining and retail options and a 40-minute drive from Wausau.

The successful candidate will teach the current and next generation of highly skilled workers in the primary and secondary wood manufacturing industry, with an emphasis in the hardwood segment. This individual shall be comfortable teaching a diverse set of program course topics from the forest products industry, in a variety of formats, and using multiple forms of technology for instruction. The successful candidate will also work directly with businesses and organizations from across the country and support our Program Director as we continue to develop and grow the program. The faculty position works 40 weeks out of 52 weeks per year.

The position of Strike Force Crew Leader requires a crew leader with 1-2 years of experience who understands the importance of planning and executing out-of-town projects. He or she will work closely with our Forest Inventory Manager to plan and implement a broad range of forest management, inventory, and consulting projects. The location of the position is Tupper Lake, NY or surrounding area. Other locations in New York or New England will be considered.

The Strike Force Crew Leader will be part of the Strike Force Team. The team is comprised of foresters that are strategically located throughout the Northeast. Each member works locally with one of LandVest’s 10 regional offices conducting harvest layout, marking timber sales, local inventory projects, boundary line maintenance, and other forestry related tasks. The team travels together to a project location approximately 8-10 days per month.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Supervise Strike Force team with guidance from the Forest Inventory Manager on out-of-town forest management, inventory, and consulting projects with a focus on inventory projects across the Northeast.
  • The crew leader will work alongside other Strike Force members to execute the assigned project.
  • Inventory: Overstory and understory data collection using a variety of inventory methods including point sample, fixed radius and carbon inventory protocols. Use of field data recorders and mobile GIS solutions.
  • Timber Marking: Implementation of silvicultural prescriptions through marking & sale layout.
  • Other Field Duties: Boundary line maintenance and GPS data collection.
  • At a minimum, an associate’s degree in forestry, natural resources, environmental science, or related field.
  • Preferred one or more years of work experience with similar duties. Carbon cruising and people management experience are a plus.
  • Passion for the outdoors.
  • Strong work ethic, dedication and commitment to excellence.
  • Open mind and readiness to learn from experienced foresters.
  • Willingness to work alone outdoors in all weather conditions and difficult terrain.
  • Willingness to travel across the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and occasionally elsewhere on short notice.

  • Experience and thoughtfulness in leadership and supervisory role.
  • Ability to solve problems.

Desired: All the skills below will be critical to be successful in this position.  LandVest is willing to train the right individual. 

  • Knowledge of forest mensuration and comfort with the tools of forest inventory and the underlying concepts, including angle gauges, clinometer, digital hypsometer and other current technologies.
  • Confidence in basic skills needed for forest inventory, such as tree and plant identification and navigation both with compass and GPS.
  • Become an expert timber cruiser with the ability to assist the Forest Inventory Manager as a check cruiser.
