FRA-Led Legislation, the Jobs in the Woods Act, Introduced to Strengthen Forestry Career Pathways

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE– Tuesday, July 22, 2025
Washington, D.C. – FRA applauds the introduction of the Jobs in the Woods Act, H.R.4575, a bipartisan bill led by Representatives Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA-03) and David Rouzer (R-NC-07) to address critical workforce shortages in the forestry sector and invest in the next generation of forestry professionals. Original House Cosponsors include Reps. Pete Stauber (R-MN-08), Chellie Pingree (D-ME-01), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-01), and Glenn Thompson (R-PA-15).
The Jobs in the Woods Act would establish a federal grant program to support workforce training in forestry-related careers. Grants would be available to nonprofit organizations, state agencies, and colleges to help prepare individuals for careers in the timber industry and public land management, including positions with the U.S. Forest Service. With much of the forest products industry rooted in rural communities, this legislation creates meaningful opportunities for individuals to gain skills that serve both their careers and their communities.
FRA is also pleased to note that a Senate companion bill, S.1336, was introduced in April 2025 by Senators Angus King (I-ME) and Jim Risch (R-ID). The earlier introduction of the Senate version reflects strong bicameral momentum behind this workforce-focused initiative.
“The Jobs in the Woods Act provides targeted solutions to rural workforce shortages and strengthens the forest economy. By investing in training for forestry-related careers, both in high school programs and adult workforce pathways, the legislation ensures a skilled labor pipeline for the entire wood supply chain. It’s a forward-looking approach to revitalizing forest-based communities and securing America’s sustainable resource infrastructure,” said Tim O’Hara, President, Forest Resources Association.
FRA has worked closely with lawmakers and stakeholders to shape the legislation, ensuring it reflects the real-world needs of forestry employers, educators, and workers.
