FRA Issue Update - 10/15/21

The Department of Labor (DOL) announced on October 12 that the first half of the FY 2022 cap of 33,000 visas was reached on September 30. This is the earliest that the H-2B cap has been met and is six-weeks sooner than the FY 2021 first half visas.

In the opinion piece titled, “Who is going to plant all those trees? --Thune's bill addresses multi-year tree planting backlog,” explores how several bills introduced this year address the need for increased tree planting but fail to address the dire labor shortages.

FRA Issue Update - 10/1/21

The Pandemic Assistance for Timber Harvesters and Haulers (PATHH) application period ends on October 15, 2021. The PATHH program provides financial relief to timber harvesting and hauling businesses that experienced a 10% or greater loss of gross revenue in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

FRA Issue Update - 9/3/21

Yesterday, the House kicked off its march toward finalizing its $3.5 trillion spending and tax proposal with a virtual markup in the House Natural Resources Committee. The committee’s $31 billion energy and climate proposal is focused on the oil and gas industry and limiting energy production off of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, among other things, and does not address the forestry and forest products sector in any meaningful way.

FRA Issue Update - 8/13/21

Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate passed a comprehensive infrastructure package titled the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act on a vote of 69-30. The bipartisan measure includes over a half-trillion dollars in spending on roads, ports, bridges, and rail, among other priorities.

FRA Issue Update - 7/30/21

For the last several weeks, the Senate has been on the verge of finalizing an infrastructure spending package. A bipartisan group of 22 Senators has been signaling that a deal is imminent since last week, and on Wednesday, Senate leadership announced that an agreement had indeed been forged.
