FRA Issue Update - 7/16/21

Sometimes you play offense, and sometimes you play defense. FRA had to play both this week to address measures included in FY spending bills heard in the House Appropriations Committee. On Tuesday, FRA played offense to successfully include an amendment in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) FY2022 Appropriations bill markup.

FRA Issue Update - 7/9/21

The House Appropriations Committee will release the final fiscal year spending bills on Sunday, with plans to pass the 12 annual spending measures before August recess. An important measure that has yet to be included in the Homeland Security budget is the returning worker exemption for H-2B visas.

FRA has prepared an action alert that allows you to contact your Senators and urge them to support the Temporary H-2B Visa Forestry Exemption Act (S.2207). The legislation sponsored by Senator John Thune (R-SD) would create a five-year exemption to the H-2B cap for forestry workers to address a multi-year backlog in forest management that includes tree planting.

On Thursday, Senator John Thune (R-SD) introduced legislation (S.2207) that would temporarily increase the availability of H-2B visas for forestry workers. The bill would create a 5-year exemption to the H-2B cap for forestry workers to address a multi-year backlog in forest management that includes tree planting.

FRA Issue Update - 6/18/21

On Tuesday, Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28), along with Representatives David Joyce (R-OH-14), Bill Keating (D-MA-9), Chellie Pingree (D-ME-1), Steve Chabot (R-OH-1), and Andy Harris (R-MD-1), introduced the Returning Worker Exemption (RWE) Act (HR 3897). This bill addresses the antiquated H-2B visa cap by making more workers available to ensure that seasonal businesses, like tree planting, can meet their labor needs.

FRA Issue Update - 6/4/21

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28) and a bipartisan group of lawmakers will soon introduce an H-2B reform bill that would provide permanent cap relief. The legislation would create a permanent returning worker exemption and require the Departments of Labor, Homeland Security (DHS), and State to create a single online filing portal that would eliminate the need to express mail paper documents.

FRA Issue Update - 5/21/21

FRA and #forestproud collaborated to put the FRA woods to mill schematic into action and produced a short video showing the connectivity of the wood supply chain. The video was created to show decision-makers that harmful policies may cause inefficiencies in one sector, leading to inadequacies throughout the entire wood supply chain.
