Georgia-Pacific Corp. announced earlier this month that it will close its bleached-board operations at Crossett, costing 555 people their jobs. In 2011, the company closed its plywood and stud operations, and 700 people lost jobs.
This FRA Region, managed by Rick Meyer and extending from Texas and Oklahoma through western Florida and Alabama, is comprised of members who grow, harvest, transport, and/or consume fiber, primarily for delivery to sawmills, plywood plants, OSB mills, pulp and paper mills, and wood-energy facilities. Current issues of emphasis are trucking availability and trucking insurance issues, and logging capacity as it relates to wood fiber availability. The Region hosts a two-day Annual Meeting in the spring and a Southwide Timber Security Group Meeting in the fall. The Security Group Meeting location alternates every other year with FRA’s Southeastern Region.
