Safe Routes Legislation

FRA was on hand at an event in Green Bay, WI on Thursday where Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI-08) highlighted legislation he intends to introduce to allow trucks operating at the maximum gross vehicle weight on state roads to access the Interstate Highway System for relatively short distances when it makes sense to do so. The list of speakers at the event is below. FRA President Deb Hawkinson discussed the safety benefits this bill would deliver and thanked Rep. Gallagher for his leadership on this critical issue.

  • Oneida Nation Chairman Tehassi Hill
  • Wisconsin State Representative Jeff Mursau
  • US Congressman Mike Gallagher, WI-08
  • Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Designee Craig Thompson
  • Matt Jensen, American Loggers Council
  • Deb Hawkinson, Forest Resources Association
  • Scott Suder, Wisconsin Paper Council
  • Bruce “Sparky” Enstrom, Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association

FRA is busy working on Capitol Hill to recruit a Democrat co-lead for this effort. We have had many productive conversations thus far and hope to have good news on this front shortly. On that point, Congress has left Washington for the next two weeks. Known in Congressional parlance as state or district “work periods”, Members of Congress are back in their states or districts to provide meaningful opportunities for people to connect with lawmakers. If you get the chance to talk with your representative when they are home over the next couple of weeks, please ask them to support the Safe Routes legislation by cosponsoring the bill. Rep. Gallagher’s lead staff contact on this issue is Will Smethers. Congressional offices may contact Will at [email protected] for additional information or to communicate their support.

Speaking of Congressional recess, these periods are also great for arranging tours at your facilities for Members of Congress. These events are particularly effective in educating Members of Congress about our operations and the value we provide to the community in terms of jobs and related economic development. If you are interested in reaching out to your representative to tour your facility, forest land tracts or logging operations, and need some assistance, please contact FRA and we can help.
