Dr. Joe Conrad: FRA’s 2021 National Technical Writing Award Winner

Washington, DC. - The Forest Resources Association (FRA) honored Dr. Joe Conrad as its 2021 National Technical Writing Award Winner during the 2021 Annual Meeting on May 19th. This annual award recognizes the best Technical Release published as selected by FRA’s National Operations Committee. Dr. Conrad, Assistant Professor of Forest Operations at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources, was acknowledged for his exemplary technical writing in his recent Technical Release: Access to Interstate Highways Would Improve Timber Transportation in the US South (20-R-11). His work featured recent University of Georgia research that quantified the safety and efficiency benefits of applying state weight laws to interstate highways. Dr. Conrad’s study analyzed more than 900 unique haul routes from more than 250 harvest sites in eight wood baskets in the Southern U.S.

Former FRA Chairman Lee Alexander of International Paper honored Dr. Conrad during the FRA Board of Directors Meeting. Dr. Conrad thanked Chairman Alexander for the award and acknowledged both FRA and the Georgia Forestry Foundation for sponsoring his research that served as a foundation for this Technical Release. He further added, “thanks to the University of Georgia for allowing me to conduct applied research that matters to folks in the industry like you all, and thanks to FRA for this award. It really means a lot to me.” This was Dr. Conrad’s second FRA National Technical Writing Award, as he received the exact same honor last year during the FRA 2020 Annual Meeting. Chairman Alexander congratulated Dr. Conrad for winning “two in a row,” and FRA President Deb Hawkinson further added that FRA has enjoyed a great working relationship with Dr. Conrad over the last few years, and stated how much his work has helped the association make a difference on improving the forest products industry’s transportation sector.

The Forest Resources Association promotes the interest of forest products industry members in building federal public policy engagement, enhancing supply chain relations, and addressing forest operations challenges. It is the only national association to represent all sectors of the wood supply chain, and members are represented in 49 states and 377 Congressional Districts.
