Coosa Pines Restructuring Includes Biopower Contract

On July 12, AbitibiBowater announced that its Coosa Pines, Alabama pulp mill had signed a five-year contract with Alabama Power to provide the utility with 15 megawatts of generating capacity, as an element in its ongoing reconfiguration. In February, the mill stated that it would cease paper manufacturing, to concentrate on fluff pulp. A company spokeswoman stated, “The pulp and paper industry has experienced many market challenges over the past several years, as have numerous industries in this current economy. Power is one of the largest cost drivers in our business, and this agreement with Alabama Power provides an important step toward Coosa Pines’ sustainability.”
