Many cave-hibernating bat species in the eastern U.S. have experienced significant mortality in recent years due to the fungal disease, white-nose syndrome. Therefore, because these species also use forests, there is significant interest in understanding their habitat relationships in managed forest landscapes.
This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the first half allotment of H-2B visas for FY 2019 have already been used up in the first quarter, a development which underscores the urgent need to fix the guestworker visa program.
FRA signed onto a letter that was delivered to House and Senate Leadership requesting support for H-2B reforms (seasonal guestworker program).
Senate and House leaders negotiating final terms on a new Farm Bill announced this week that a tentative deal has been reached. Negotiations have been tied up on disagreements over work requirements for food stamp recipients and, more recently, over federal forest management provisions in the House-passed bill.
Nothing in nature goes to waste. When a branch falls in the forest, fungi go to work consuming its sugars and recycling it back into the forest floor.
