The Forest Resources Association and STIHL Incorporated honored Dobbs Logging, Inc. of Littlefork, Minnesota, as the Lake States Region 2017 Outstanding Logger at FRA’s Lake States Region Fall Meeting in Duluth, Minnesota on October 25th.  Accepting the award on behalf of Dobbs Logging was Gordon Dobbs. FRA Lake States Coordinator Steve Kariainen presented Gordon with a wooden crosscut-saw plaque.
Since the August newsletter, it was announced that six new counties would be quarantined for emerald ash borer (EAB). The find in Chippewa County was due to a vigilant landowner while the other finds were due to trapping by USDA APHIS.
Governor Scott Walker announced today that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources state forestry headquarters will be relocating to the DNR Rhinelanader Service Center by the first of next year.
A warming climate is spurring change in Great Lakes forests. The shift affects rainfall, wildlife and growing seasons–major factors determining forest makeup. Warmer temperatures in northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are already favoring some tree species over others, scientists say.

On September 20, the Forest Resources Association’s Appalachian Region honored Shawn Gragg and Kyle Bush with its Second Place Technical Writing Award for 2017.  This annual Award recognizes the best Technical Releases published and posted on FRA’s website.

Miles K. Benson, a longtime leader of sustainable forestry, is being inducted into the Wisconsin Forestry Hall of Fame on September 13, 2017. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources submitted the nomination for Benson.
Excess, or unused, logging capacity still appears to be a source of cost and concern to the wood supply value chain in many regions of the United States.   Since 2002, WSRI has done a number of studies that shed light on the factors that drive this inefficiency in the system.
Fall is starting and it is time to finish up those end-of-the-year Log A Load events for your local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) hospital.  If you have not planned an event yet, make sure to work with your state association and children’s hospital to plan one before the end of the year.
