Forest Products Industry Day on the Hill

by
On July 17, FRA joined other sustainable forestry advocates on Capitol Hill for Forest Products Industry Day, staffing a display demonstrating the role of harvesting in forest renewal, with 2014 National Outstanding Logger Anthony Andrews, of Trenton, North Carolina, on hand to interact with Congressional staffers from his field-level perspective and knowledge base. The event, hosted by the International Conservation Caucus Foundation, the American Forest & Paper Association, and International Paper, featured displays by AF&PA, the American Wood Council, the American Forest Foundation, International Paper, the U.S. Department of Energy, North Carolina State University, as well as The Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund.

The event culminated in a panel featuring Congressmen Bill Owens (D-New York), Kurt Schrader (D-Oregon), Stephen Fincher (R-Tennessee), and Reid Ribble (R-Wisconsin), each presenting examples from their districts of fostering a healthy forest industry that allows for innovation while continuing current efficient and responsible practices. A second panel, presenting the views of industry and association executives—including former FRA Chairman Dave Liebetreu of International Paper and AF&PA CEO Donna Harman—placed U.S. forestry practices and goals within the context of global conservation challenges, touching on means of confronting illegal logging and the potential contribution of biomass energy development.
