Minnesota Loggers Protest GVW Restrictions

by FOR

On September 27, an estimated 70 log trucks, at least some fully loaded, “rolled through downtown Duluth [Minnesota] this morning to draw attention to complaints about weight limits on interstate highways that lead some trucks to use state highways and city streets instead,” according to that day’s [Minneapolis] MinnPost. Minnesota’s Interstate/state highway gross vehicle weight differential for log trucks varies seasonally but may exceed 20% for winter hauling, and truckers have long been irritated that hauling fully loaded to the state limit excludes them from the Interstate, compelling them to go through the traffic and stoplights of Duluth.

Apart from Rep. Chip Cravaack (R-Minnesota), who pursued several legislative projects in the current Congress to address Minnesota’s situation, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) is also on record as supporting reform.
