Salazar Apparently Rejects “Northwoods National Park”

by

At a Senate Interior Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on February 29, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) expressed to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar the growing opposition and dwindling support within Maine for the creation of a new “Maine Northwoods National Park” formed from the proposed donation or sale of lands accumulated by Roxanne Quimby. Sen. Collins referred specifically to Maine’s long history of successfully “working with private owners to ensure public access” to woodlands and cited a joint resolution opposing the creation of such a Park from the Maine legislature, as well as from towns in the region, from industry, and from sportsmen’s and recreational groups.

The Secretary appeared to accept this consensus: “We have no plans to move forward on a reconnaissance study,” he reiterated twice. The four-minute exchange is viewable at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSE-5Q_BEwE.
