J & L Trucking: FRA's 2018 Appalachian Region Outstanding Logger

by

Lexington, KY – The Forest Resources Association and STIHL Incorporated honored James and Lucille Pennington, owners of J & L Trucking, LLC in Durbin, West Virginia, as the Appalachian Region 2018 Outstanding Logger at FRA’s Appalachian Region (AR) Awards Dinner in Lexington, KY on October 11.  FRA’s AR Chairman Ervin Bielmyer presented James and Lucille with a wooden crosscut-saw plaque, a STIHL MS 461 chain saw gift certificate and $250 check (chain saw and check compliments of STIHL).

The husband-and-wife team of James and Lucille Pennington started their logging business fairly recently--in 2011—but James had been logging and log trucking for many years and Lucille grew up in a logging family.  They quickly established a reputation as one of the best logging companies in the state.  (J & L was selected as the West Virginia Forestry Association’s Logger of the Year in 2017.)

Operating a manual harvesting operation safely requires top-notch felling practices, excellent communication between the chain saw operator (James) and the skidder operator (Lucille), and constant attention to proper personal protective equipment and maintaining safe working distances between on-the-ground workers.  The Penningtons accomplish this while treating each job and each piece of land as if it were their own.

J & L Trucking’s reputation as a safe, dependable, and environmentally conscious operation has helped it secure many logging contracts from Northwest Hardwoods, repeat business from local landowners, and high praise from the WV Division of Forestry personnel who are responsible for inspecting logging operations for implementation of Best Management Practices.

Upon receiving this award that recognizes J & L Trucking’s forest stewardship and conscientious attitude, James stated simply that, as a logging business, “We do what we’re supposed to do.”

FRA’s Outstanding Logger Award program is designed to raise the visibility of professional logging contractors and to encourage other loggers to adopt the performance of the award winners.  The Regional Award winner becomes a nominee for FRA’s National Outstanding Logger recognition.

The Forest Resources Association Inc. is a nonprofit trade association concerned with the safe, efficient, and sustainable harvest of forest products and their transport from woods to mill.  FRA represents wood consumers, independent logging contractors, and wood dealers, as well as businesses providing products and services to the forest resource-based industries.

STIHL Incorporated serves as the sponsor of FRA’s Regional and National Outstanding Logger Awards.
