New Orleans, LA – On April 17, the Forest Resources Association (FRA) honored Bernard Rose with its National Technical Writing Award for 2018. This annual Award recognizes the best Technical Release published by FRA, as selected by FRA’s National Operations Committee.
Bernard Rose is the wood procurement manager for KapStone Kraft’s pulp & paper mill in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. His winning Technical Release (17-R-5) is entitled Using Woodyard Cameras to Improve Truck Driver Safety Compliance.
The Roanoke Rapids mill has six cameras at the scales, to help the scaler quickly and easily monitor the wood quality on every incoming load of roundwood and to make sure the drivers are wearing the required PPE. KapStone has also installed multiple cameras at the unbinding racks and in other locations on the woodyard.
Computer monitors located in the scale house and wood procurement office enable the scalers, procurement personnel, and the office administrator to glance at camera footage and casually observe driver safety compliance as they are performing their normal daily activities. This camera monitoring system, combined with enforcement of driver safety rules on the woodyard, has helped KapStone accomplish a driver safety compliance rate close to 100% on the woodyard.
